Soft wash describes the use of detergents matched to dissolve specific stains then rinsed away with low pressure. All stains are different requiring unique detergents. Organic staining such as mold, moss or algae will require almost the opposite detergent than rust, lime and/or oxidation. The old school pressure washing method relied solely on pressurized water to blast away the stain. An approach like this leaves roof for damage to sidings, caulking around windows as well as screens.
The Process

These living organisms respond favorably to bleach based detergents since the oxidizing process of bleach creates enough heat to dissolve dark algae staining and kills moss on contact. By gently applying a foaming bleach-based detergent to the root of the organism the stain will die and rinse away.
Moss works a bit different since it develops a root system into the shingle. The disinfecting detergent applied will soak to the root killing the growth at the source. Methods gentle will not disturb the roof yet render the organisms dead at the root.
