NJ Soft-Wash Cedar Roof Cleaning

Cedar roofs require a specialized approach to cleaning. Unlike asphalt shingles, cedar shakes can be damaged by high-pressure washing, which is why we use a proven soft-wash process designed specifically for cedar roofing materials.

Our gentle cleaning system safely removes and treats moss, algae, mold, mildew, lichen, and other organic growth without causing damage to the wood. More importantly, we don’t just clean the surface—we eliminate the organisms responsible for the staining and discoloration, helping your roof stay cleaner longer.

As a family-owned and operated New Jersey company since 1996, we’ve spent nearly 30 years refining our cedar roof cleaning methods to deliver exceptional results while protecting your home and landscaping.

Why Cedar Roofs Require Specialized Cleaning

Cedar roofs are one of the most beautiful and durable roofing materials available, but they also require a different maintenance approach than asphalt shingles, metal roofing, or slate. Because cedar is a natural wood product, it is more susceptible to moisture retention, organic growth, and weather-related deterioration if not properly maintained.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is hiring a contractor who treats a cedar roof like any other roof. High-pressure washing can strip away the wood’s protective surface, damage cedar shakes, cause splitting, and significantly shorten the roof’s lifespan.

Professional cedar roof cleaning requires specialized cleaning solutions, proper dwell times, and low-pressure application methods that safely remove algae, moss, mold, mildew, and lichen without harming the wood. When performed correctly, routine cedar roof maintenance can improve curb appeal, preserve the natural beauty of the wood, and help extend the life of your roof for years to come.

At Thompson Roof Cleaning & Powerwashing, we’ve been cleaning and restoring cedar roofs throughout New Jersey since 1996 using proven soft-wash methods designed specifically for cedar shake roofing systems.

Common Problems We See on Cedar Roofs Throughout New Jersey

New Jersey’s humid summers, coastal moisture, shaded properties, and seasonal weather create ideal conditions for organic growth on cedar roofs. Over the years, we’ve seen many of the same issues affecting cedar shake roofs across the state.

Moss Growth

Moss is one of the most common problems found on cedar roofs. It traps moisture against the wood surface, which can accelerate deterioration and create conditions for rot if left untreated.

Algae and Black Staining

Dark streaks and discoloration are often caused by algae growth. While many homeowners view this as a cosmetic issue, algae can retain moisture and contribute to premature aging of the roof.

Lichen Infestation

Lichen can be particularly damaging to cedar roofing because it anchors itself directly to the wood surface. As it spreads, it can break down the cedar and make cleaning more difficult if not addressed early.

Mold and Mildew

The combination of shade, humidity, and moisture can create ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth. In addition to affecting appearance, these organisms can contribute to wood deterioration over time.

Weathering and Loss of Natural Color

Exposure to sun, rain, snow, and changing temperatures gradually causes cedar shakes to lose their original appearance. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help preserve the roof’s character and identify potential issues before they become costly repairs.

If you’ve noticed moss, algae, lichen, or discoloration on your cedar roof, addressing the problem early can help prevent more extensive damage and prolong the life of your roofing investment.

How We Clean Cedar Roofs

Cedar roofs and siding require regular maintenance to prevent moss, mold, and mildew growth. Most homeowners find it challenging, however, to find a trusted contractor who has experience properly handling this unique material.

There is a lot of conflicting information and cleaning methods out there, but no clear-cut standard of maintenance, even from cedar shake manufacturers. Many homeowners end up deferring to the expertise of the contractor who installed the roof, for better or worse.

At Thompson, we’re experts at roof cleaning of any type, including cedar!

With nearly 30 years of experience behind us, we understand the ins and outs of roof cleaning and how to handle it safely and effectively.

FAQ: Can You Pressure Wash a Cedar Roof?

The overall answer is no. Though cedar is very resilient towards the harshest of elements, its consistency is quite soft as far as wood is concerned. Using high pressure can certainly damage or dislodge the cedar shakes. The primary staining on a cedar shake roof is accumulated mold, algae, lichen, and/or moss. Each of these living organisms thrives in moist areas with little or no sunlight.

Pressure washing does not fully remove these organisms at the root level. To fully neutralize the stain a complete application of a properly ph-balanced disinfecting detergent must be applied to all areas of the cedar shakes. There are biodegradable detergents available on the market that safely eradicate living organisms that create stains on a cedar roof.

After a full application and a short dwell period, the roof can be rinsed to neutralize any remaining detergent, leaving the cedar roof fresh, clean, and free of wood rotting algae, moss, and mold.

There is no need for pressure washing since pressure washing does not fully sterilize the roof. We approach the stain as a pest and aim to create a sterile surface. This is the best defense against the stain return. Can You Pressure Wash a Cedar Roof?

Cedar Shake Restoration + Nourishing Oil With UV Block

Cedar roofs are expensive to install and repair. Fortunately, cedar shake restoration is a practical and economical alternative that can bring your roofing and siding back to their glory–for a fraction of the cost.

FAQ: Should we seal the cedar shake roof or siding?

Cedar shakes were designed to breathe as to not trap moisture. There are certain highly refined oils, such as this shingle oil, that can be applied to the shake while it’s wet and will act as a water-repellent. However, a fully sealed roof would trap moisture and create premature rot, so it is not recommended.

Our Roof Moss Removal Approach Is Safe & Effective

We approach cleaning moss off the roof as treating an infection. Furthermore, we create a 100% sterile surface. You can be sure the roof remains stain-free for an extended period of time, whether it’s for asphalt roofs, cedar roofs, slate roofs, cement, or tile roofs. What you can expect:

Removal Of Unwanted Pests — A roof with moss, mold, lichen, and black stains absolutely cannot reflect sunlight. This lack of reflection creates higher attic temps and increased cooling costs in the summer. Not to mention these organisms are literally eating your roof. This is why we treat the problem like “pest control”.
Efficient & Safe Service — We clean roofs using water pressure no greater than 65 psi, which is equivalent to a garden hose pressure. We guarantee a 100% kill ratio of roof growths such as mold, moss, algae, and gleocapsa magma (which is the strand that causes those ugly black stains on an asphalt roofing shingle).
Lower Energy Costs — Particularly when you compare the cost of premature roof replacement and the increased electricity bills with the cost of treating a roof, you will quickly see that IT PAYS TO CLEAN YOUR ROOF!
